Washington’s New Law: Driver’s Ed Required Up to Age 22 by 2030

Starting January 1, 2027, Washington will begin expanding the Driver’s Education requirement for new drivers.

By 2030, anyone under 22 years old applying for their first license must complete an approved Driver’s Ed course before testing.

🚦 Who It Affects and When

If your child was born on or after January 1, 2008, these rules will apply to them.

If your child was born after January 1, 2007 and still hasn’t gotten their license, these new rules will also apply.

Each year starting in 2027, one more age group will be added:

  • 2027: Only 19-year-olds can still get a license without Driver’s Ed.
  • 2028: Only 20-year-olds can get a license without Driver’s Ed.
  • 2029: Only 21-year-olds can get a license without Driver’s Ed.
  • 2030: Everyone under 22 must complete Driver’s Ed before getting a license.

🚗 Why It Matters

Drivers 18-21 who skip Driver’s Ed have higher crash rates than those who take it. This change helps all new drivers learn safe habits, defensive driving, and key traffic laws before hitting the road.

At Control Driving School, we’re ready to help with Driver’s Ed courses, the Knowledge Test, and the Driving Test, all in one place.
